Description
Grand Canal Venice by Auguste Renoir
Renoir traveled to Italy in 1881 to study classical masters such as Titian. While in Venice, he painted landscapes of the city. This particular painting initially was not well received by the public because the style deviated from typical Venetian paintings of the time by such artists as Canaletto, which focused on architectural details of the buildings. This painting, however, was consistent with Renoir's style showing saturated light and vibrant colors.
This scene was painted on the stretch of the Grand Canal next to the Rialto Bridge. Notice how Renoir paints the pinks, yellows and oranges glistening on the water as a reflection from the buildings lining the canal. Notice also how the eye is drawn to the gondolier in the shadow on the bottom right of the painting. This shows Renoir's mastery of both light and dark.
This image was created by photographing the original painting with a high-definition Leica camera. This guarantees that you get the finest quality possible. The watermark in the lower right hand corner of the picture does not appear on the final print.
