Description
Doors of India - Blue Door and Red Door by Miles Whittingham
I took this image in the old part of the city of Panaji. Panaji is the capital of the state of Goa, India.
At one time, Goa was a Portuguese colony. This is evident in these two old doors, which show a strong Portuguese influence. The window, however, is what is special about this picture. It is of a classic Portuguese design known as 'placuna placenta' or 'window pane oyster' in English.
The small white squares in the window are actually thin semi-translucent oyster shells. It takes a phenomenal number of oyster shells and an incredible amount of work to cut the shells thin enough to create a window like this. How special is that?
This image was captured using a high-resolution Leica camera. This guarantees that you get the finest quality possible. The watermark in the lower right hand corner of the picture does not appear on the final print.
