Venice Bridge of Sighs by MG Whittingham
Look beneath Venice and you see another Venice. This is the famous Bridge of Sighs. On the right, the white marble building holds the judicial courts. Here, justice was meted out in a very Venetian manner.
Convicted prisoners were then escorted across the bridge in the middle of the photograph (this is the Bridge of Sighs) to the red brick building on the left, which held the prison.
The Bridge of Sighs is so named because convicted prisoners would stop on the bridge and look out the small windows in the middle of the bridge. It was the last time many of them would see their beloved Venice. The prisoners would sigh before being escorted to their dark prison cell where they would likely spend the rest of their life.
