Description
Spirit Light Antelope Canyon by Miles Whittingham
This is a picture from Antelope Canyon. The canyon is located in the desert in northern Arizona. It is in the middle of the Navajo Indian reservation. The only way to access the cavern is with a Navajo guide.
I took this image in March around the time of the spring equinox. On the day of my visit, the cavern was full of people. It was very dusty from everyone walking on the sandy floor.
Suddenly out of nowhere a vertical beam of light came down through the narrow opening in the roof of the cavern. The canyon walls, the sun and the clouds all had to be aligned just perfectly for this to occur. The Navajo guides said this had never happened before so early in the year.
When the sun beam entered the cavern, the dark walls lit up as if they were on fire. The colors were amazing.
The guides tried to hold back the crowd while I set up my camera and tripod to capture the amazing light.
The light beam lasted for just two minutes before it disappeared as suddenly and mysteriously as it had come. I only managed to take a couple of frames, but it was enough. It was a truly magical experience.
I realize now why the Navajo Indians consider Antelope Canyon to be such a spiritual place. One day, I hope to return.
