Scherzo by Otto Friedrich 1913

Little known today, Otto Friedrich was an Austrian painter who along with Gustav Klimt was a founding member of the Secession art movement.

Scherzo, the title of the painting means child's play. The children are on a beach somewhere and are naked, which was not uncommon on Austria beaches during this time period. The group of girls are obviously teasing the young boy.

This painting was exhibited at the Vienna Secession in 1913 where it received praise from an unusual quarter. The Russian Revolutionary Leon Trotsky saw it as was quite taken by the painting. He wrote that it "inspired the viewer with...the harmony of line and color."
