Description
A Second Angel Playing the Lute by Melozzo da Forti
This is a fragment of a much larger fresco image done by the Italian artist Melozzo deli Ambrosi, more commonly known as Melozzo da Forti. This particular fragment of the fresco shows an angle playing the lute.
What is amazing about this image is that it looks like it could have been done yesterday. The colours are vivid and the figures are finely painted in the correct perspective.
In fact, this image is more than 500 years old. It is thought to date from around 1480. It comes from a lost fresco that once graced the Basilica of the Holy Apostles (Santi Apostoli in Italian) in the city of Rome.
The artist Melozzo is thought to have been one of the first artists to have mastered the concept of three dimensional perspective. He was highly influential in his time. In fact, Melozzo is thought to have strongly influenced Michelangelo's technique when he painted the frescos in the Sistine Chapel.
If you have even seen the Sistine Chapel, you can tell the similarity between the two styles, although Melozzo did his fresco some 30 years before Michelangelo.
This image of an angle playing the lute is part of a larger collection of fragments from Melozzo's fresco that can be seen in the Vatican Museum. I have pictures of several of these fragments on my website. Each picture is beautiful in it's own right.
This image was created by photographing the original fresco fragment with a high-definition Leica camera. This guarantees that you get the finest quality possible. The watermark in the lower right hand corner of the picture does not appear on the final print.
Prints are produced on acid-free paper using archival inks to guarantee they last a lifetime without fading or loss of contrast, colour or tone.
If you chose to order a framed print, the framing is done to museum quality with archival matting. The frame is wired and comes with a wall hook. It is ready to hang on the wall.
