Description
Traditional Iceland Cemetery by Miles Whittingham
This dramatic black and white image shows a traditional Icelandic cemetery. There are few of these cemeteries remaining in the island nation. I came across this cemetery in a small hamlet in the Eastern Fjords of Iceland, a region that gets few outside visitors.
Each of the graves in this cemetery is on a raised bed covered with grass and wildflowers. A simple white cross adorns each gravesite.
Although the cemetery may appear at first glance to be wild and overgrown, it is clearly lovingly and meticulously maintained . It is designed to fit in with nature.
Surprisingly given its natural look, the cemetery appears to date back to at least the 1700s, possibly even much older.
I have been to many cemeteries in many countries. I have never seen a cemetery as profound as this one.
This superb black and white photograph was taken with a professional Leica medium format camera. The superb quality and high resolution of the camera guarantees that you get the the highest image quality possible. The watermark in the lower right hand corner of the picture does not appear on the final print.
Prints are produced on acid-free paper using archival inks to guarantee they last a lifetime without fading or loss of contrast, colour or tone.
If you chose to order a framed print, the framing is done to museum quality with archival matting. The frame is wired and comes with a wall hook. It is ready to hang on the wall.
