Description
Watson's Mill by Miles Whittingham
Watson's Mill is a grist mill. Grist mills grind wheat into flour. At one time, almost every town had a grist mill. They were often located on a river. The flow of the river was used to turn the giant grinding stones that were used to produce the flour. Now, grist mills have become rare, especially ones that still operate.
This beautiful old grist mill is located in the town of Manotick, just south of Ottawa, Canada. It sits on the Rideau River. The dam across the river is used to divert the flow of water into the basement of the mill, where giant turbines turn to power the mill. This grist mill still produces flour.
This image was taken during the spring flood of 2017 when the water level on the river was very high.
This time-lapse black and white photograph shows the timeless beauty of the grist mill.
The watermark in the lower right hand corner of the picture does not appear on the final print.
