Description
View of the Oissel Cotton Mill Near Rouen by Camille Pissarro
Pissarro painted this bustling cityscape in 1898 at the age of 68 near the end of his life. At this point, he was a famous Impressionist painter who commanded massive sums for his idyllic country scenes. And yet, Pissarro chose to reinvent himself as a painter of cityscapes.
As an Impressionist, Pissarro was interested in modern life. When he painted this image, he was wealthy and comfortably settled in the countryside with his family. Still, Pissarro found himself deeply connected to mills and places of trade.
Notice the busy cotton mill in the background and the boats unloading the cotton in the foreground, presumably from the New World. Perhaps it reminded Pissarro of his youth.
In spite of the fact that Pissarro was a famous French Impressionist painter, he was actually born and raised on the island of St Thomas in what is now the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.
This image was created by photographing the original painting with a high-definition Leica camera. This guarantees that you get the finest quality possible. The watermark in the lower right hand corner of the picture does not appear on the final print.
Prints are produced on acid-free paper using archival inks to guarantee they last a lifetime without fading or loss of contrast, colour or tone.
If you chose to order a framed print, the framing is done to museum quality with archival matting. The frame is wired and comes with a wall hook. It is ready to hang on the wall.
