Three Cherubs by Melozzo da Forti
This is a fragment of a much larger fresco image done by the Italian artist Melozzo deli Ambrosi, more commonly known as Melozzo da Forti. This particular fragment of the fresco shows three cherubs.
What is amazing about this image is that it looks like it could have been done yesterday. The colours are vivid and the figures are finely painted in the correct perspective.
In fact, this image is more than 500 years old. It is thought to date from around 1480. It comes from a lost fresco that once graced the Basilica of the Holy Apostles (Santi Apostoli in Italian) in the city of Rome.
The artist Melozzo is thought to have been one of the first artists to have mastered the concept of three dimensional perspective. He was highly influential in his time. In fact, Melozzo is thought to have strongly influenced Michelangelo's technique when he painted the frescos in the Sistine Chapel.
