Renoir exhibited this painting at the first Impressionist group exhibition of 1874 held in Paris.
In French, "la loge" means "theater box". This painting is meant to evoke a private box at the opera. Many art historians, however, often refer to this famous Renoir painting simply as "the box". In painting this image, Renoir was probably trying to find a subject matter that would be appealing to potential rich patrons.
The man in the picture is Edmond, Renoir's brother. The woman is Nini Lopez, a popular model at the time "with a profile of antique beauty". The man is in the background and using his opera glasses to look out at the audience, clearly not paying attention to the play that is unfolding beneath him.
The woman, who is the focus of the painting, has a slightly unfocused gaze as if she knows that she is being watched. Her beautiful doll-like complexion, playful wisps of hair and carefully placed...
