Childe Hassam is considered to be America's foremost Impressionist painter. A contemporary of Monet, Hassam studied for several years in France before returning to the United States to paint scenes of every-day life in New England in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Hassam believed that "the man who will go down to posterity is the man who paints his own time and the scenes of everyday life around him". Today, his paintings are considered to be some of the finest images of American life.
