This is a portrait of the famous Mohawk leader and warrior Thayendanegea, also known by his British name Joseph Brant. The city of Brantford, Ontario is named after him.
During the American Revolution, Brant's people were forced from their ancestral home by the Americans. He travelled all the way to London, England to gain an audience with King George III to defend his people's sovereignty.
This portrait shows Thayendanegea's complex identity. It shows him wearing a mix of indigenous and British clothing.
The cross and silver gorget (a piece of armour) hanging around his neck was a gift from George III. In his hand is a pipe tomahawk - used both as a weapon in war and used as a symbol of piece.
