This beautiful historic library is part of the Strahov Monastery in the Czech Republic. It is arguably the most beautiful library in all of Prague.
The room that houses the library is known as Philosophical Hall in honour of all the philosophy books in the collection. The library was build in 1782 in a Baroque style. Notice the beautiful Baroque bookcases with their elaborate carvings.
Many of the books in this collection are much older than the library, with some dating back as far as 800 years ago. The core of the collection is primarily religious and philosophical texts.
The Strahov Monastery that contains this library was originally founded in 1140. The monastery grew rich over the years from agriculture and their extensive land holdings. The monastery was also well known for their beer and wine making capabilities. Money raised from the sale of beer and wine went into buying books. As a result, this monastery has one of the finest historic book collections in the world.
