Description
Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh
Nobody does a starry night like Vincent Van Gogh.
The deep blue sky in multiple tones of intense cobalt blue pierced by sparkling yellow-green stars. Brilliant!
In this painting made in Arles in the south of France in 1888, Van Gogh also captures the glowing lights of the city across the harbour. In the sky is the Big Dipper star constellation. In the foreground can be seen some boats in the water and two people walking along the shoreline.
This was one of Van Gogh's favourite paintings. He loved the light in Arles. "I am absolutely convinced that nature as it is here is what is needed to work with colour" he declared.
For a long time, Van Gogh struggled to realize his vision of the night sky. He confided in his friend Emile Bernard "I wonder when I shall do that Starry Night, the painting that has forever been on my mind". This is it!
