Signac painted this colorful image in the port city of Marseilles, France. The bustling port is in the foreground while the church Notre Dame de-la-Garde sits on a hill in the background.
Signac had recently visited the painter Matisse, who is thought to have encouraged Signac to paint using bolder colors, as in this painting.
In this painting, Signac also evolved the pointillism technique of George Seurat. This painting consists of a series of rectangular strokes arranged in a mosaic pattern. The result is spectacular.
