Description
Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci
This is the most famous painting in the world. Through the centuries, it has been the subject of countless books, songs and movies.
The Mona Lisa is also arguably the most valuable painting in the world. The last time it was insured was in 1962 (over 50 years ago) when it was valued at $100 million.
In French, this painting is known as La Joconde and in Italian it is known as Monna Lisa or La Gioconda. For such a famous painting, however, it is shrouded in mystery. Painted some 500 years ago during the Italian Renaissance by the great master Leonardo da Vinci, it is one of his few paintings that remain today.
The painting is thought to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, who came from a merchant family in Florence, Italy. In addition to its aesthetic appeal (the portrait bears a strong resemblance to Renaissance depictions of the Virgin Mary), scholars for centuries have debated Mona Lisa's enigmatic smile. If you look closely, you can also see that she is wearing a veil.
Another remarkable thing about this picture is that there is no evidence of a brushstroke anywhere on the painting. Da Vinci perfected a painting technique that he called 'sfumato', which in English roughly means 'in the manner of smoke'. This results in a painting where all the colours and tones are seamlessly blended together. Truly remarkable.
This image was created with a high-definition Leica camera. This guarantees that you get the finest quality possible. The watermark in the lower right hand corner of the picture does not appear on the final print.
Prints are produced on acid-free paper using archival inks to guarantee they last a lifetime without fading or loss of contrast, colour or tone.
If you chose to order a framed print, the framing is done to museum quality with archival matting. The frame is wired and comes with a wall hook. It is ready to hang on the wall.
