Jesus by Melozzo da Forti
This is a fragment of a much larger fresco image done by the Italian artist Melozzo deli Ambrosi, more commonly known as Melozzo da Forti. This particular fragment of the fresco shows Jesus.
What is amazing about this image is that it looks like it could have been done yesterday. The colours are vivid and the figures are finely painted in the correct perspective.
In fact, this image is more than 500 years old. It is thought to date from around 1480. It comes from a lost fresco that once graced the Basilica of the Holy Apostles (Santi Apostoli in Italian) in the eternal city of Rome.
The artist Melozzo is thought to have been one of the first artists to have mastered the concept of three dimensional perspective. He was highly influential in his time. In fact, some scholars think Melozzo strongly influenced Michelangelo's style when he painted the famous frescoes in the Sistine Chapel.
