Description
Imperial Fritillaries in a Copper Vase by Vincent Van Gogh
Van Gogh painted this flower arrangement in 1887 while he lived with his brother Theo in Paris. Theo was an art dealer and he had recently introduced his brother Vincent to many of the most famous Impressionist painters of the day, people like Monet and Renoir.
Before meeting the Impressionists, Van Gogh painted mainly darker monotone pictures (like "Head of a Peasant Woman", also in this collection). Then he became influenced by Impressionist techniques. He opened up his colour palette and began to experiment with lighter, brighter colours and more vivid brushstrokes. Much of his early experimentation with colour was done with flower arrangements.
In this painting, Van Gogh has attempted a very strong colour contrast between the yellow-orange fritillaries complemented by the copper vase and the blue background.
Notice how Van Gogh has used yellow-white dotes on the blue background to make sure the blue does not overwhelm the painting.
This painting is important because it is considered to be a transition piece to some of Van Gogh's most famous works, like "Starry Night" (also in this collection).
This image was created by photographing the original painting with a high-definition Leica camera. This guarantees that you get the finest quality possible. The watermark in the lower right hand corner of the picture does not appear on the final print.
Prints are produced on acid-free paper using archival inks to guarantee they last a lifetime without fading or loss of contrast, colour or tone.
If you chose to order a framed print, the framing is done to museum quality with archival matting. The frame is wired and comes with a wall hook. It is ready to hang on the wall.
