Description
Harvard Airplanes by Miles Whittingham
This image shows three Harvard airplanes flying in formation.
Harvard airplanes were first flown in 1938 just before the start of World War II. In the US, the airplane was known as the T-6. The Harvard was a basic combat training aircraft. Most fighter pilots in the British Commonwealth air forces trained on these aircraft. In total, some 20,000 were built in the US, Canada and Australia.
The Harvard aircraft played a vital role in preparing pilots for combat in World War II. After the war, the plane was relegated to armament training and reserve squadron use. Many Harvard airplanes are still flown today. They are a staple of airshows featuring World War II aircraft.
