Description
Emily Carr in Her Studio 1939
This is a photograph of Carr in her studio in Victoria, British Columbia. The picture was taken near the start of World War II. At this point in her career, Carr was a well established artist.
There are a couple of interesting things to note about this photograph.
First, it is obvious by the expression on her face that Carr does not liked being photographed, even for publicity purposes. A lonely, solitary figure for most of her life, Carr had difficulty relating to others.
Notice also Carr's dress, which appears to be a west coast indigenous style. Carr clearly related deeply to First Nations culture.
Finally, notice the large number of finished but unsold works on the right-hand side of the photograph. Even though Carr had achieved critical acclaim, it took her a long time to sell her paintings.
Emily Carr was a west coast Canadian artist whose paintings were inspired by nature, her own spiritual beliefs and the indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest coast.
Carr was formally trained as a classical painter in San Francisco and as an Impressionist painter in France in 1910.
Working alone in Victoria, British Columbia her work received little attention until 1927. That year, her work was included with paintings from the famous Group of Seven artists in an exhibition held at the National Gallery of Canada.
The watermark in the lower right hand corner of the picture does not appear on the final print.
