Description
Boating on the Seine or The Skiff (La Yole) by Auguste Renoir
This beautiful summer scene was painted by Renoir at Asnieres, a village on the Seine River near Paris. This painting is sometimes referred to as "The Seine at Asnieres". The painting combines three popular motifs of the Impressionist movement: rowboats, sailboats and steam trains. Most critics agree that this is the most thoroughly Impressionist painting that Renoir ever made.
Notice Renoir's brilliant use of color in his textbook feathery brushstroke. In particular, notice how the iridescent blue water offsets the gorgeous golden rowboat. In technical terms, this is called a concentrated luminosity of color. It is incredibly difficult for any artist to achieve. Renoir did it better than anyone.
This image was created by photographing the original painting with a high-definition Leica camera. This guarantees that you get the finest quality possible. The watermark in the lower right hand corner of the picture does not appear on the final print.
