In the summer of 1869 when Monet was just 29, he worked at a popular cafe and bathing spot on the banks of the Seine River just outside of Paris known as La Grenouillere. His good friend and fellow painter Auguste Renoir worked with him.

This painting looks different from pictures normally associated with Monet. That is because it was painted about five years before Impressionism even hit the art scene, which occurred at the first Paris Impressionist exhibition in 1874. At the time of this painting, Monet was still finding his artistic vision.

In this picture, the view is down the Seine River. People in bathing suits and caps are standing on a small dock watching people swim in the water.

Even in this early painting, you can start to see how Monet's style was evolving into what would later be known as Impressionism. This is particularly evident with Monet's treatment of water at the bottom right of the painting.
