Angel Playing the Viola by Melozzo da Forti
This is a fragment of a much larger fresco image done by the Italian artist Melozzo deli Ambrosi, more commonly known as Melozzo da Forti. This particular fragment of the fresco shows an angle playing the viola. Viola are somewhat similar to violins, except they have a lower and deeper sound.
What is amazing about this image is that it looks like it could have been done yesterday. The colours are vivid and the figures are finely painted in the correct perspective.
In fact, this image is more than 500 years old. It is thought to date from around 1480. It comes from a lost fresco that once graced the Basilica of the Holy Apostles (Santi Apostoli in Italian) in the city of Rome.
